Girish Kumar Ramaiya Vastavaiya Movie Review and Ratting

Boy meets girl, girl meets boy, fall head-over-heels in love, kins disapprove, lovers resolve to please the vexed members by dint of hard work, grit and goodness, succeed and live happily ever after— hasn't Bollywood dished out similar fare year on year previously? Well, but that doesn't really stop the makers of romantic films from trying to replicate the “run-of-the-mill” plot in their own “individualistic” way, does it? Prabhu Deva's “Ramaiya Vastavaiya” is a classic example of that.

After amusing the audience with his spicy potboilers like “Wanted” and “Rowdy Rathore”, actor-turned-choreographer-turned-director Prabhu Deva is back with a Bollywood masala romance this time. His “Ramaiya Vastavaiya” cashes on the age-old formula and seems heavily inspired from yesteryear hits like “Maine Pyar Kiya”, “Anari”, “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge” and 'Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya”.

“Ramaiya Vastavaiya” is the remake of Prabhu Deva's Telugu directorial debut “Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana” (2005). Certainly the film shares 'deja vu' moments with aforementioned flicks, but Prabhu's ingenuity lies in the way he unfurls the 'tried-and-tested' in his own way. Full points to the director and screenplay writer Shiraz Ahmed for garnishing the movie with a spate of new, mass-friendly punches, interesting characters and several entertaining sequences.

Story

Ram (Girish), the only son of an Australian based billionaire couple Siddharth and Ashvini, comes to India. He is a flirt who comes across as an impish, pampered, and ill-behaved guy to every girl.

Sona (Shruti) is a coy lass from a small village in Punjab. She has a doting brother, Raghu (Sonu Sood), who would go to any extent to make his kid sister happy.

Ram bumps into Sona at the wedding of his cousin Riya, a good friend of Sona, and is at once smitten by her simplicity. He chases Sona and young love blooms.

But the love reverie is intruded by an overly possessive brother, who plays the spoil sport in the love story. He believes that the difference between the two families is too big to be bridged. Yet, Ram decides to pursue his love. Moved by his determination, Raghu throws a spate of challenges at Ram.

Will Ram and Sona manage to overcome the hurdles and live happily ever after? Here's the twist. Go, find out yourself.

Prabhu Deva's “Ramaiya Vastavaiya” is an entertainer, if nothing else. Aimed at the masses, Prabhu Deva proves that he can handle a romantic entertainer well with this movie. While the movie might appear to be run-of-the-mill and very, very predictable, we are caught unawares on the second half, which is especially delightful to watch.

That is not to say that the film is free of faults. To begin with, the chemistry between Girish and Shruti is “not happening” enough. Furthermore, the narration tends to drag after a while, adding to the agonizing length of the movie.

Tips has been famous for dishing out great tracks and this movie is no different. Musical duo of Sachin-Jigar does a fab job of entertaining the audience with their massy-sassy as well as soothing romantic numbers. 'Jeene Laga Hoon' is dulcet, while 'Jadoo Ki Jhappi' and 'Rang Jo Lagyo' never fail to make the audience tap their feet. Priya Panchal's lyrics enhance the beauty of the songs, and the choreography too, leaves a lasting impression.

Producer Kumar Taurani has left no stone unturned to make the launchpad movie of his son Girish an entertaining one. The movie is replete with songs, dance, action and plenty of emotion and the actor seem to get it right with all thekey aspects. The debutant actor is photogenic, and looks confident in front of the camera.

Shruti Hassan looks beautiful, radiated glamor, is expressive and juggles demureness with naughtiness with great ease.

The long list of supporting stars, which include actors like Govind Namdev, Nasser, Poonam Dhillon, Randhir Kapoor, Satish Shah,Vinod Khanna, Zakir Hussain, Sarfaraz Khan, Mushtaq Khan and Paresh Ganatra, add to the strength of the film.

Final Word:To cut the long story short, Ramaiya Vastavaiya is a sweet love story handled brilliantly by the gifted Prabhu Deva. The second half of the movie is gripping, the musical score impressive. Makes for a good weekend watch.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya releases today, that's 19th July 2013.
